Dredging underway on Wicomico River
SALISBURY, Md.- In Wicomico County, work is underway to dredge the Wicomico River and 47ABC was told this is something that will help the local economy stay afloat.
The River has to be dredged every two to three years and this year they are dredging the upper portion.
The dredging process involves removing a lot of built up material, so that ships can safely navigate the channel.
This project will help ensure that ships can continue to safely carry supplies to and from the area, which helps the local economy.
“It is the major impact, economically as what we’ll do for Kato, what we’ll it do for Perdue to bring their grain into here, and things like that,” Bob Culver, Wicomico County Executive, said. “It’s big business and it’s very important, many people don’t know just how big and important is to Wicomico county.”
The Army Corps of Engineers is paying for project and it will take around a month and half to complete.
Wicomico County is looking into a new dredge pool site for the future in Somerset County.
