Dover Police investigating string of shootings
DOVER, Del. – Police in Dover are investigating after a string of shootings in the city.
“On December 24, on Christmas Eve, we had shots fired in the area of South New and Reid Street in Dover, in that incident I believe two houses were both struck by gunfire, they were both occupied however no injuries resulted,” Cpl. Mark Hoffman with the Dover Police Department said.
Christmas Eve gunfire, and that was just the beginning of a busy and violent few days for officers in Dover.
“On December 26, we had another shots fired incident that occurred in that same location,” Cpl. Hoffman said.
No injuries in two shootings, but that all changed with a third shooting on Monday morning. Two men were standing on a porch on South New Street when things turned dangerous.
“They were both struck by gunfire after being approached by several subjects,” Cpl. Hoffman said.
It’s three shootings in less than a week, but that’s not something necessarily uncommon for the city of Dover. It’s clusters of shootings like this that made 2019 a more violent year than years past.
“in total hours shooting incidents for 2019 are higher than 2018 but I don’t have a set number on that at this time,” Hoffman said.
Despite an increase in gunfire, the Downtown Dover Partnership says people are still flocking to the city, including businesses.
In a statement the partnership wrote, “Small businesses continue to grow and thrive in downtown Dover. The city of Dover Police Department and their downtown foot patrols work closely with the downtown merchants to ensure safety for downtown business owners, employees, and shoppers.”
Still, police in the city are working hard to cut back on gun violence, but they need the community’s help to do so.
“The less description and the less cooperation we have from any witnesses or any citizens of the area, it certainly makes our job much more difficult,” Hoffman said.
