DelDOT seeks to improve intersection prone to crashes

GEORGETOWN, Del. – Many residents on Old Furnace Road, in Sussex County, are raising concerns over an intersection that they say has become a hotspot for accidents.

“It’s a dangerous intersection,” said Paul Morris, a Sussex County resident.

“We hear quite a few bangs, bang ups, and we can hear them from the house here,” said Morris.

According to state officials, the intersection of Old Furnace Road and Cokesbury Road has a high frequency of crashes.

“It’s just been just a bad place,” said Morris.

“Bad intersection coming across,” said Morris.

Now DelDOT is proposing several plans to improve this intersection.

The first is to keep the area as it is, while improving signage. The other is to make Old Furnace Road free-flowing and have traffic from Cokesbury Road stop at the intersection.

“Maybe with signs. Anything to improve it,” said Morris.

Residents also took to social media, discussing the possibility of turning the area into a roundabout.

Paul Morris tells 47ABC it is hard to watch his wife and family use the intersection and face the possibility of getting into a serious accident.

“Sometimes I wonder if she’s pulled out too far to make that turn or what you know, because I’m scared of traffic coming on,” said Morris, “I’m scared they’re going to run into us.”

Neighbors add that drivers also need to slow down and they ultimately hope this change will come sooner rather than later.

State Senator Brian Pettyjohn has also released a survey, asking residents to share what improvements they would like to see at the intersection moving forward.
