Thanksgiving home cooking fires; Salisbury Fire Department gives tips to prevent these fires

SALISBURY, Md.- Thanksgiving is a holiday where there will be tons of cooking going on and a lot of distractions. That can lead to house cooking fires to happen.

Thanksgiving is by far the leading day for U.S. home cooking fires and in Salisbury that is no different. Officials said more than three times as many home cooking fires happen on Thanksgiving.

There are various causes for the fires, whether it be unattended cooking or not taking the proper steps while cooking a turkey. But one of the main instances fire fighters are seeing nowadays, is people using turkey fryers and not using them correctly.

“You really gotta be on the ball because you have a lot of things there, you have hot oil, you have propane, you have a lot things that can go wrong, you know it’s a whole different ball game then cooking your turkey in the oven,” Bryan Records, Assistant Chief of the Salisbury Fire Dept., said.

The fire department wants people to really study up on using a turkey fryer if they plan to do that this holiday. They said make sure to thaw the turkey before anything.

Also, they said to take your time, use common sense, and make sure you have a working smoke detector and fire extinguisher.
