UPDATE: Suicidal Lewes man shot by trooper; pronounced dead at hospital
LEWES, Del. – Delaware State Police confirm a Trooper involved shooting occurred at 8:22 Friday evening.
According to officials, Troopers responded to the 300 Block of East Savannah Road.
Police said when they arrived, they saw that a 47-year-old man, was standing in the driveway of the residence holding a handgun and threatening self-harm.
There was communication with the man; police said on two different occasions while talking with the suspect, he placed the gun on the ground.
Officers said the man then went to go pick up the handgun again, refusing to listen to officers who were telling him not to do so.
Once the man had the handgun, officials said he then pointed it at the Troopers and Lewes Police Dept. officers, at which time a responding Trooper fired his weapon, striking the subject in the upper torso.
Officers on scene immediately called emergency medical care and the man was taken to Beebe Hospital.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
As of Friday evening, East Savannah Road was closed between Cedar Street and Massachusetts Avenue.
The Trooper involved in the incident is a part of Troop 7 in Lewes and has been employed by the Delaware State Police for five years. He has been placed on administrative leave.
