Hollamon’s last minute goal lifts Delmar to Henlopen title over Cape

Teams begin respective DIAA tournaments next week

GEORGETOWN, De- In a game featuring two defending DIAA state champions, the Delmar Wildcats field hockey team won the first ever Henlopen Conference championship game over Cape Henlopen 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Delmar freshman Josie Hollamon netted a game-winning goal with 36 seconds remaining to keep the Wildcats undefeated streak alive. (16-0, 59th straight)

The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead off a score by freshman Maci Bradford, and led for much of the first half. Cape would answer back late in the first half when Anna Stancofski got her stick on a shot inside by Cameron Smith. For the first time all year, Delmar would roll into the locker room without the lead.

29 and a half minutes of the second half was even hockey, with goalies Kellie Davis (Delmar), and Julie Heffernan (Cape) putting up great performances. After Hollamon’s goal, Cape would have one more chance at a corner as time expired. The Wildcats would fend off the attack to take the win.

Both teams will now gear up to defend their respective DIAA state titles.
