Historical Society needs donations to keep history alive
OCEAN VIEW, Del. – One house in Ocean View is full of history, and now groups in Delaware are working to preserve that history.
“We don’t have a cultural and history museum for our little part of the county, and yet we have a fascinating history like everyone,” Dr. Kimberly Grimes, the Coastal Towns Museum Chair, said.
And now, organizers from several historical societies in Delaware are working together to preserve that fascinating history.
“Our beach towns are all working together, Fenwick Island, South Bethany, Bethany Beach, Ocean view, Millville, all the historical groups are working together,” Dr. Grimes said.
Working together to transform a 1900s house into a museum where you can go to learn about history that made Delaware what it is today. But transforming that house is a lot of work.
“Right now we’re doing some basic restoration work, as you can see its a 1901 house that’s in great shape, but we do you need to do electrical work, we’re doing some of the floors, painting, those things,” Dr. Grimes said.
That’s where you come in. These organizations need donations to be able to bring this history to life.
“We love five dollars, we love five-hundred dollars, whatever you can give,” Dr. Grimes said.
For some organizers, this is about more than just the history of the town. For some, it’s personal.
“My grandfather and grandmother built the house on land that was given to them by her father in 1901,” Barbara Slavin, President of Ocean View Historical Society, said.
It’s history like that that organizers are hoping to keep alive for neighbors in Ocean View.
“I have people calling me all the time saying ‘well I live in a house on Hudson Avenue, and I need to know how old it is,'” Slavin said.
It’s a community effort to make sure the past isn’t forgotten.
“There’s a growing awareness that we need to actually preserve some of this before it’s all gone, because in a blink it will be all gone,” Dr. Grimes said.
If you want to donate, you can visit the Ocean View Historical Society’s Facebook page, or their website. If you donate through Facebook on Giving Tuesday, which is December 3rd, Facebook will match your donation.
