Gulls win Field Hockey CAC Championship after thrilling finish
SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University was crowned CAC Field Hockey champions following their 2-1 victory over Christopher Newport at Sea Gull Stadium on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
Camryn Dennis opened the scoring late in the first quarter off of a penalty corner, one of nine for the Gulls in the first period.
Salisbury controlled the pace of play for much of the first half, leading CNU in shots, 5-4, and corners, 11-7.
The Captains came out strong out of halftime.
Nyla Lewis cashed in early in the third quarter for CNU, tapping in a shot that had ricocheted to her in front of the cage.
Senior Arielle Johnston proved to be the hero for Salisbury, deflecting a pass from Rachel Domanico into the back of the net with four minutes to play.
Salisbury outshot CNU, 10-6, on their way to a berth in the NCAA tournament.
