Fatal Greenwood accident under investigation
GREENWOOD, Del. – State Police are investigating a fatal accident that happened Saturday evening in Greenwood.
According to investigators, a 70-year-old woman was driving a Kia Rio south on Route 13 around 6 p.m. She apparently stopped her car in the cross over at the intersection of Woodyard Road before turning left. The woman reportedly did not see a man driving a Ford Explorer north and pulled out in front of him, causing the two cars to crash.
The Kia Rio hit the left rear of the SUV and drove off the road before coming to a rest. The SUV drove through the grass median and rolled over several times before landing upside down in the south lane of Route 13.
The driver of the SUV, identified as 33-year-old Brooks Perry from Camden-Wyoming, was wearing a seat belt but was pronounced dead at the scene. A front seat passenger in the SUV was not wearing seat belt and was ejected from the car during the crash. He was brought to Christiana Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The driver of the Kia Rio, a woman from Greenwood, was also wearing a seat belt but was taken to Bay Health Sussex Campus with non-life threatening injuries where she was treated and released.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 13 were closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated. The crash is still under investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit. No charges have been filed at this time. Police do not believe impairment is a factor in this crash.
