Dewey Beach road closed off to traffic following water main break

DEWEY BEACH, Del. – This week, crews struck a water line while working on a pedestrian improvement project on Coastal Highway in Dewey Beach.

The pedestrian project includes the installation of flashing lights at intersections where there is no traffic light so that pedestrians can hit a button and cross the highway safely.

While crews were putting in the underground electric for that project, they struck a water line on McKinley Avenue that wasn’t marked.

We’re told usually, crews would be able to fix something like this pretty quick but weather has slowed things down.

George Pierce, an Area Engineer for the Delaware Department of Transportation said, “So it happens occasionally. Generally, we can fix that quick but it’s been bad weather so we haven’t been able to get a hot mix crew in there to repave the area so we’re stuck waiting until the weather breaks on Monday.”

McKinley Avenue should be back open to traffic by next Wednesday.
