Bill legalizing marijuana passes House Committee
47ABC- Legalization of marijuana at the federal level may be gaining traction after a House bill was passed out of committee Wednesday.
The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2019 was passed out of the House Judiciary Committee.
The bill calls for removing cannabis from the list of controlled dangerous substances and also for all convictions and arrests to be expunged.
This is the first time a congressional committee passed a bill in favor of legalizing marijuana at a federal level.
“If we can finally get a federal discrimination bill passed, it will have momentous effect for everyone. The social justice impact of something like that is huge when you look at how different social groups are impacted with cannabis laws,” Anthony Darby, CEO of Peninsula Alternative Health, said.
Darby said even though this is an exciting moment, there’s still hurdles we need to face to make it happen, such as passing the full House and the Senate.
