Veterans given warm welcome to Eastern Shore
MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. – It was a hero’s welcome, and a hero’s send off on Wednesday in Mardela Springs as veterans from across the country came to the Eastern Shore for a special retreat.
The veterans came as part of Hero’s Haven, a group that works to help injured veterans.
Today the group was welcomed in Mardela Springs, then given a police escort before they went to get dinner and meet their host families for the week.
The week is all about hunting, spending time with fellow veterans, and supporting one another.
Hank Wheatley, the president of the group, says the organization was designed to just make sure that veterans are okay.
“Our goal is to stop that one person, especially in the veterans, from committing suicide that day and being part of the 22,” Wheatley said.
The group is entirely volunteer based and relies on volunteers to help feed and house the veterans while they’re here on Delmarva.
