Three teens dead, 6-year-old unaccounted for after car drives into canal

MIDDLETOWN, Del. – Three teenagers are dead and one six-year-old child is unaccounted for after a car drove into the C&D canal on Sunday.

Officials say a Chevy HHR drove into the canal around 9:41 a.m. When they arrived on scene, first responders say they found a 16-year-old female on the banks who was a passenger in the vehicle. She made it to shore with the help of the 18-year-old driver of the car, who then went back into the water to attempt to rescue other passengers. That driver died during his attempts.

Police say two other passengers, a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old, both males, were later found still in the vehicle, and were pronounced dead.

The six-year-old passenger who was in the vehicle at the time remains unaccounted for.

The identities of all of the victims has not been released, and this remains an ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Delaware State Police at 302-365-8486.
