PRMC hosting free drive-thru flu shot clinic

SALISBURY, Md.- Flu season is right around the corner so experts are urging you to get your flu shot.

Doctors recommend you get a vaccine by the end of October because it takes about two weeks for your immune system to develop antibodies. Last year’s flu season was the longest one we’ve seen in a decade, lasting from October 1st to May 4th. But experts tell 47 ABC it’s hard to predict how severe flu season will be so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“Well last year went a little long and went into May. But one of the things is you never know what it’s going to be from season to season. So one of the things the CDC has said this year is you should try to get your flu vaccine to last for 6 months. So October is the perfect time to get it,” says Karen Mihalik, an Infection Preventionist with PRMC.

PRMC is hosting its 25th Drive Thru Flu Shot Clinic at the Shorebirds Stadium from 8 a.m. 6 at p.m on Friday, Ocotber 11. It’s recommended that everyone 6 months or older get a flu shot. But PRMC is only offering free shots at the drive thru clinic to people aged 13 or older. Those between 13 and 17 years old need to bring a parent or legal guardian to sign consent. A physician’s order is not necessary.

PRMC says, “Flu vaccinations are encouraged for anyone over the age of 6 months, but especially for people over the age of 65, people with heart or lung disorders, immunosuppressant diseases or diabetes. Participants are encouraged to wear a short-sleeved shirt that will provide easy access to the upper arm.”
