DOVER, Del. – Dover Police are investigating a crash that claimed the life of one and injured three others Tuesday night.

According to police, the incident happened just before 10 p.m., in the area of S. DuPont Highway and Webbs Lane. Investigation revealed that a Toyota Sienna being driven by 67-year-old Deborah Young was traveling south on S. DuPont Highway approaching Webbs Lane. At the same time, a Kia Soul being driven by 27-year-old Wayne Briney tried to turn left from the northbound turn lane of S. DuPont Highway. The Toyota hit the passenger side of the Kia, resulting in both vehicles spinning.

A short time after the initial accident, 27-year-old Shawn Shannon entered the roadway on foot to try to help those involved in the accident, when a Jeep Cherokee being driven by 56-year-old Michael Baize hit the Toyota that was still occupied by Young. The Toyota crossed the southbound lanes of S. DuPont Highway, the grass median, and northbound lanes of S. DuPont Highway before coming to rest on the edge of the roadway. Shannon was hit by one of the vehicles as a result of this collision.

Young was taken to Bayhealth Kent General where officials say she died as a result of her injuries.

Shannon was also taken to Bayhealth Kent General where he is currently listed in critical condition.

Briney and Baize were treated for minor injuries and released.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and it has not been determined whether or not charges will be made at this time.
