MDOT reveals new traffic signal on US 50 to improve safety

SALISBURY, Md. – Some new safety improvements have officially been launched in Wicomico County after a number of traffic incidents’ were reported on Route 50. On Thursday, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration activated the new US 50 westbound signal at White Lowe Road. Improvements include new traffic signals, a channelized merge lane, and a new guardrail. Over the past couple of months MDOT worked on adding these safety measures to ensure drivers stay safe and reduce traffic congestion.

“We were seeing a crash history and just a pretty good increase in volume over the years so we wanted to make sure that we took care of that now. We never want to put a signal on a free flowing highway if we can help it. But safety is a priority and that’s why we did this,” said District Community Liaison, Bob Rager.

Rager also wants to stress the importance of drivers paying attention to these new traffic changes. He says the new signal and intersection will effectively address safety concerns, but it only works if drivers do their part.
