Md. Senate president Mike Miller steps down

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland’s longtime Senate president Mike Miller is stepping down to deal with his cancer diagnosis.

76-year-old Thomas V. Mike Miller announced back in January that he has stage 4 prostate cancer. He has continued to preside over the chamber while undergoing chemotherapy, but announced in a closed-door meeting on Thursday that he will be stepping down from his position.

Miller is the nation’s longest-serving senate president, serving since 1987.

Sen. Bill Ferguson was nominated by the Democratic caucus to take Miller’s place.
