Locals protest conditions at migrant detention centers at border

OCEAN CITY, Md. – Despite high winds and rain, people from across Delmarva made their way to the Ocean City Boardwalk on Sunday to demand change for immigrants at the U.S. southern border.

The event was hosted by the group Indivisible Worcester MD.

“I don’t think we’ve lived up to the promise of the American Dream with the way we detain people,” said Cindy Roman, an Ocean Pines resident.

“When we say we’re going to show up, we show up,” said Susan Buyer, co-founder of Indivisible Worcester MD.

So, people on Sunday raised their voices calling on Congress to fix conditions for migrants at border detention centers.

“We’re not talking about them enough,” said Roman.

Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General reports cite dangerously overcrowded detention centers and some children have been found without showers and clean clothes.

“This is something just so far beyond our values as a society,” said Buyer.

Many Americans including Buyer say the country is committing real human rights violations and that too many people are not taking enough action.

“There are far too many people who tend to put their heads in the sand and say well it doesn’t affect me,” said Buyer.

Some people in Ocean City say they hope to bring more awareness about certain living conditions for migrants at the US southern border.

A federal judge last month rejected new rules that would allow the government to keep children with their parents in detention indefinitely.
