Habitat Home getting built in less than five days

ELLENDALE, Del. – An impressive construction project is underway in Delaware as a group of local contractors work to build an entire home in less than five days. The ambitious timeline is the vision of the Sussex County Habitat For Humanity.

“It’s just been an experience to watch a house go up in hours. Well minutes and hours,” says Yonta Clanton, the future homeowner.

It’s all hands on deck as more than 30 local contractors work to build Yonta Clanton’s new home in Ellendale.

“This morning we started framing at about 7 a.m. and the house will be finished sometime Thursday afternoon,” says Brian McManus, the director of construction with D.R. Horton.

It’s all part of the Sussex County Habitat for Humanity’s Builders Blitz. “It gets the building community involved in Habitat that’s a way that’s unique because we can say, ‘Would you help out for a day or for a week?’ As opposed to our normal builds take three or four months for about two days a week,” says Kevin Gilmore, the executive director of Sussex County Habitat for Humanity (SCHFH).

Local home builder D.R. Horton is spearheading this project but this isn’t their first blitz build. They’ve also led five others in the past. “It’s just a great event. I love when the homeowner sees the house for the first time. It’s so refreshing and I feel blessed to be a part of it,” says McManus.

It’s that feeling of gratefulness that radiates through out the entire build. “This means a lot to me and my family. So much we wanted to do for so long and we finally get to come to this,” says Clanton.

Families who buy homes through Habitat for Humanity are required to take classes to learn about home ownership and financial planning as well as help out on other home builds. Officials say they want these home owners to have all the tools they need to successfully take on such a big financial responsibility.
