Gun found at Somerset Intermediate School

WESTOVER, Md. – Officials say a crisis was averted at the Somerset Intermediate School Friday morning.

According to the Somerset County Superintendent’s Facebook page, the student fled the building for unknown reasons this morning, making a comment to other students as he was fleeing. The other students then reported the comment to staff members, which prompted emergency personnel to respond.

Deputies with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department found the student outside the school and searched his belongings, locating and confiscating a firearm. The student and his belongings are now in the possession of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

The school was searched and no other issues were found. Classes continued as normal.

Officials say details are still somewhat limited but the investigation is continuing. We will have more details as they become available.
