Governor’s Race promotes active lifestyle

DOVER, Del. – The weather was beautiful for the Governor’s Race in Dover, Tuesday afternoon.

Hundreds of people came out to participate in the 5K race or the one mile walk. This event has been going on for at least five years now. State officials use it as a way to encourage residents to get active and live a healthy lifestyle. Governor John Carney even participated, walking the 5K. He tells 47 ABC, the event allows him to lead by example while reminding residents about all the other ways you can fit physical activity into your daily routine.

“Just 30 minutes of brisk walking or working in the garden or cutting the grass or vacuuming the house, whatever it is. Regular activity, 30 minutes at a time. We think it’s something most adults can do and it’s a message we’re trying to get out to everyone,” says Delaware Governor John Carney.

Health experts recommend that adults get 30 minutes of brisk walking in, at least 5 days a week. That amount of physical activity, according to state leaders, can help cut down your risk for chronic disease and even reduce health care costs.
