Fruitland family to host inaugural PFIC awareness event

FRUITLAND, Md. – A family in Fruitland that shared their story with us about their 9-year-old son suffering from a rare genetic liver disorder, is now holding an event this weekend to raise awareness about the disease. On Saturday, the Kearns family will be holding the inaugural Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis awareness event, also known as PFIC. They say the event will also help raise money for families affected by PFIC and to let them know they’re not fighting alone. The Kearns family says this all began when their three boys started a lemonade stand to raise money after their son Trey was diagnosed with the disorder. In honor of their efforts the event will have lemon themed snacks and other activities for children of all ages to enjoy.

“This event is very important for us. It helps raise awareness for the community and the world. We have PFIC patients that we work with from all over the globe. So we’re just trying to get the word out and let people know how important it is and how much money we need for research,” said John Kearns.

The event will be held at the Beach Bounders Gymnastics Building in Fruitland from 12:30 PM until 1:30 PM. It will be $5 for gym members to get in and $10  for non-members.
