Fire at Smyrna High School intentionally set, officials say
SMYRNA, Del. – A juvenile has been charged in connection to a fire that broke out at Smyrna High School Monday morning.
According to officials, the fire was reported just before 11 a.m., after a student saw smoke coming from one of the stalls in a first floor men’s bathroom. Students and staff were evacuated immediately, and several staff members and the School Resource Officer were able to extinguish the fire with the school’s fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived on scene.
Deputy State Fire Marshals also responded and through further investigation learned that the fire was intentionally set. A 15-year-old male student was arrested in connection to the fire and charged with felony arson first degree. He was later released to his guardians on $1,000 unsecured bond.
Officials say the fire caused more than $2,500 in damage to the bathroom. No injuries were reported, and school continued as normal.
