31st Seagull Century draws thousands to Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – Thousands of cyclists traveled to Salisbury for Saturday’s 31st Seagull Century.

The annual bike ride is hosted by Salisbury University. Riders can choose between a 65-mile-long tour of Wicomico and Somerset Counties or a 100-mile-long tour that takes cyclists to Assateague and back. Organizers say the event has a $4.5 million dollar annual economic impact for Wicomico County, attracting people of all ages to the Eastern Shore.

“Our riders this year range in age from 8 to 88. And the furthest traveled rider we have comes from Ghana in Africa. And he’s a military member but he’s home and he decided that he wanted to do the ride,” says Jason Rhodes, a spokesperson for Salisbury University.

A portion of the money raised from the event goes towards scholarships and grants at Salisbury University and some is donated to local non-profits. Organizers say planning for the 2020 Seagull Century is already underway.
