Troy Haynes, Woodbridge quarterback, passes away
GREENWOOD, Del. – Delmarva is in mourning, after Troy Haynes, the Woodbridge quarterback diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer, has passed away.
Since Haynes was diagnosed in April, Fight like 4 (Haynes’ number on the field) t-shirts, stickers, and more have been seen across the Delmarva community. A GoFundMe that was previously created for the player raised over $40,000.
The four-year starter played a pivotal role in the Blue Raiders football championship in December. Following his senior year, Haynes decided to further his football career at the University of Mount Union.
Back in May, Haynes told 47 ABC he was scared when he was diagnosed with cancer, but added “…with the help of a lot of people just reaching out to me and talking to me and making sure I’m alright, it’s helped a lot.”
In June, Haynes received a standing ovation when he walked across the graduation stage at Woodbridge High School. Friends spoke of Haynes, saying he was a good friend, and that it was a blessing to have him.
Messages from across Delmarva have been coming in on social media in response to the news of his passing as thousands of people remember the player’s accomplishments on and off the field.
From all of us here at 47 ABC, our thoughts and prayers are with Haynes family and the entire Woodbridge community.
