New Maryland law goes into effect: Harsher punishments for drunk drivers

SALISBURY, Md. – A new law will go into effect on Tuesday and will crack down on repeat drunk drivers.

House Bill 707 will ensure that intoxicated drivers or boat operators face harsher penalties for killing another person while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The law increases the maximum time in jail to up to five years for drivers convicted of vehicular homicide while impaired by drugs.

The law doubles the length of jail time, from five to ten years, for repeat drunk and drugged driving offenders who’ve been convicted of vehicular homicide.

“It’s a warning,” said Senator Mary Beth Carozza.

“We’re sending out a set message here that we’re serious about taking drunk drivers off the streets,” said Carozza.

This move comes after Maryland legislators supported Governor Larry Hogan’s implementation of harsher sentences on repeated drunk drivers last year.
