Heron Park finally reopen to the public after chemical spill
BERLIN, Md. – After a chemical spill caused a popular Berlin park to close during the busy summer months, town officials are happy to announce that Heron Park has officially reopened to visitors. Officials say hazmat crews have worked around the clock to ensure Heron Park, fomerly known as Berlin Falls Park, was safe enough for everyone to use after the spill. Mayor Gee Williams tells 47 ABC the town got the okay from both the Maryland Department of the Environment and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency to reopen the park after they inspected it a number of times. Mayor Williams says he’s happy to see the park being used once again.
“All the chemicals and any soil that was contaminated was removed and now has been replaced and seeded over. We have taken every precaution to make sure that there’s no residue from the chemical spill back in June that would harm either humans or wildlife of any kind,” said Williams.
Environmental officials say there should be no worry for any further contamination or spills at the park in the future.
