Del. State Police investigating fatal crash involving dirt bike
LINCOLN, Del. – Delaware State Police are continuing to investigate a fatal crash that happened Tuesday evening in Lincoln.
Just after 9 p.m., a trooper saw a green Kawasaki Dirt Bike, an off-highway vehicle that is not street legal and not equipped with lights, traveling on Wilkins Road near Sussex Bayhealth Hospital. The trooper subsequently tried to stop the bike, but the driver fled at an extremely high rate of speed, eluding the trooper and creating quite a bit of distance between himself and the trooper.
The dirt bike continued westbound on Johnson Road approaching Marshall Street in Lincoln. A Chevrolet Traverse that was attempting to turn left onto Marshall Street failed to see the bike due to its lack of lights, resulting in a collision. The driver of the bike was ejected as a result of the impact.
The driver of the bike, identified as 38-year-old Adam Burton of Lincoln, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and police say he does not have a motorcycle endorsement on his drivers license. He was taken to Sussex Bayhealth Hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.
The driver of the Traverse, a 49-year-old female from Milford, was properly restrained and remained on scene. She was taken to Sussex Bayhealth where she was treated and released.
