City becomes first in U.S. awarded for its kindness

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury has been recognized as the first World Kindness City in the United States.

The city has taken several steps to attain this over the past few years, including the designation of a Secretary of Kindness, as well as partnering with the county schools and council to spread their message.

The process took over a year and it was rigorous, including digging into the community and getting people who live by a code of kindness.

But Mayor Day says this is just the start of the process, that more work needs to be done, especially in the classrooms, because that’s where it all begins.

“It’s gotta start there. It’s gotta start with our young folks. And we’ve got to address bullying, we’ve got to address online bullying, those are things that need attention.”

The formal announcement will be made in Switzerland in three weeks.
