Balloons Over Sussex raising money for school science labs
GEORGETOWN, Del. – The first ever Balloons Over Sussex is attracting hundreds of people to Georgetown this weekend.
Sussex Academy is hosting the weekend long event at the Delaware Coastal Airport to raise money for new science labs at the charter school. Organizers thought this was a great way to raise money while bringing the community together because it’s been about 13 years since a hot air balloon festival was in Sussex County. Although it was too windy for the balloons to go up on Saturday afternoon, organizers say there’s still plenty of things to see and do.
“We have a lot of food vendors, we have crafters, a lot of kids activities. We have an entertainment stage with bands and storytelling, a pirate and princesses show. There’s a strolling entertainer on stilts,” says Gina Derrickson, the director of development for Sussex Academy.
Derrickson and the hot air balloon pilots are hopeful that the winds will cooperate on Sunday for the second day of events.
