Wico. school fundraising for community garden

SALISBURY, Md. – A school in Wicomico County is asking for help to fundraise for a new community garden.

Choices Academy is working on creating a garden that students can use for hands on learning experiences during the school year but the community will be able to use it during the summer. The school already has money for a Hoop House, which is like a green house, as well as soil and seeds. But now they need about $7,500 to fence it all in. Organizers tell 47 ABC, this garden will help kids understand that the food they eat doesn’t just come from Walmart or the grocery store.

“I think you will see these kids who maybe aren’t really engaged in the learning experience of school become engaged in this hands on activity and when they see the end product which is the food that they can grow and when they taste it, it changes everything for them,” says Martin Hutchison, the secretary of Community Gardens for the City of Salisbury.

The food grown in the garden will also be sent home with students, to supplement the school’s food bank. As soon as the funding comes for the fence, they can build the Hoop House and plant the first seeds.
