University of Delaware football makes it nine straight wins vs. Delaware State

NEWARK, Del.- Since it’s inception, the University of Delaware has won all nine matchups of the Rt. 1 Rivalry versus their rival, Delaware State, taking the latest matchup 31-16 on Thursday night.

Delaware State would lead 6-3 after a pair of field goals, but from there, UD would go on a 28-0 scoring run to put it away.

HOMEGROWN TALENT
Former Smyrna (DE) stars, QB Nolan Henderson and RB Will Knight paired up in the University of Delaware backfield in the fourth quarter. Henderson went 4/4 with 17 yards in the air, and 20 yards on the ground. Knight, who is Delaware’s all-time high school rushing leader, rushed for a team-high 68 yards, including a 61 yard rush.

Former Delmar (DE) Wildcat Brooks Parker got the start at LB for Delaware State. The sophomore finished the night second on the Hornets with 10 tackles.

FIRST STATE CUP
University of Delaware sits 9-0 all time against Delaware State, winning all of their rivalry games by an average of 27 points per game. As Hornets’ second year head coach Rod Milstead light-heartedly said after the game, “I wish we could have played this series when I was a player back in the 80’s. The script would have been written a little bit different.”

UP NEXT
Delaware State will look to get in the win column, hosting Lincoln (PA), while UDel will head on the road for a matchup with the University of Rhode Island.
