Traveling for Labor Day Weekend? Here are the best times to hit the road

If you’re traveling this Labor Day weekend, make sure you pack your patience!

Police say Friday night is predicted to be one of the busiest times for Labor Day travel.

The Maryland State Highway Administration says the best time to travel to your destination, is before 8 a.m. Saturday or after 6 p.m. Saturday.

If you’re planning on heading to a major beach town like Ocean City, you’re encouraged to remain on major roads like Route 50 because those roads are designed for higher volumes of traffic, whereas local roads can quickly become gridlocked.

As for when you should head back, your best bet is to leave early or stay late.

Lieutenant Tim Robinson with the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office said, “The best thing we recommend is to leave early or stay a little later to avoid that peak travel time of Monday afternoon. Either leave Sunday night or earlier on Monday or wait till later on Monday evening to avoid that big traffic time and backups on the way home.”

To help with traffic, the Maryland State Highway Administration is suspending non-emergency lane closures until Tuesday.
