Salisbury University receives grant to keep migrant workers to teach

SALISBURY, Md. – A substantial grant could help keep migrant workers right here in Salisbury.

It’s all part of a 2.1 million dollar grant Salisbury University received from the Department of Education.

It’s no secret that Maryland is rich in farmland, but representatives from the University say that a lot of times, people come to work on those farms, but then leave.

This grant aims to keep those workers in the area by giving them a chance to become early-childhood educators.

And while the grant will help those workers financially, faculty at Salisbury University say that the workers will help them, too.

“It also puts individuals into classrooms that are more diverse, where young people will be able to see themselves in their teachers and potentially be able to think about becoming a teacher themselves,” Claudia Burgess, a professor at the University, said.
