Police arrest man in fatal Wyoming hit-and-run crash

WYOMING, Del. – Tragedy struck in a Wyoming neighborhood Saturday night.

“It’s a shame,” said Michael Bakota, a Wyoming resident.

Delaware State Police say a man drove on a sidewalk on Front Street and then struck and killed another man while attempting to pass a car in front of him.

The crash reportedly happened at around 8:30 PM.

Police say 26-year-old Bradford Husfelt drove up onto a sidewalk and lawn, hitting and killing a 78-year-old man.

“You can see the markings, the lawn here where he hit passing the car on the right-hand side,” said Bakota.

Police say the driver took off after the accident. Officers later arrested him at his home on Center Street. Neighbors say the victim was loved by many and that he enjoyed being outside.

“Everyday he’d come by with his hat and do this, and I’d wave to him,” said Bakota, “Always walking, I guess two times a day, and I don’t know how far he walked down there, but he always walked.”

Husfelt is now facing manslaughter, reckless driving and criminal mischief charges, among others.

As for the people who are in the neighborhood, they say they are now going to be more careful when walking outside.

“I know one thing,” said Bakota.

“I’m going to be careful now when I walk my dog, and I usually take him out back, but when I do at the sidewalk I’m going to be listening.”

The roadway was closed for about four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared, according to Delaware State Police.

Police have not yet released the identity of the victim. They are waiting until his family has been notified.

Husfelt was taken to the Sussex Correctional Institute on a nearly 60,000 dollar cash bond.
