Pocomoke community leaders give out free back to school supplies
POCOMOKE CITY, Md. – A church in Pocomoke celebrated the start of the school year with it’s inaugural Back To School Giveaway on Saturday.
Mount Zion and St. James United Methodist Church hosted the event giving out more than 100 backpacks filled with supplies to kids in the area. They also had games, music and food to get the community excited about the school year. Organizers tell 47 ABC they wanted to host this giveaway to show students in Pocomoke that the community supports them and they’re not forgotten about.
“Children are not the future, they are right now. So if we continue to pour into them and get them excited for school and use the resources and tools to achieve higher heights and greater depths. So it’s important for them,” says Keisha Dukes, the pastor at St. James U.M.C.
Dukes says the event received donations for the giveaway from as far away as Baltimore. Mount Zion and St. James are hosting other events this year as well including a coat drive and a hygiene item drive.
