Celebrate 83 years of tradition this weekend at the Wicomico County Fair

SALISBURY, Md. — Today on Good Morning Delmarva, our very own morning anchor, Erica Murphy sat with Zach Evans and Kim Nechay to talk about this weekend’s Wicomico County Fair. The fair will be this weekend from August 16th to the 18th, at WinterPlace Park here in Salisbury. The festivities begin Friday at 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Wicomico County Fair was created in 2015, bringing together features of the Wicomico Farm & Home Show and the Delmarva Chicken Festival. Zach Evans, who is the chair of the fair told us they are celebrating 83 years of tradition of the Wicomico County Fair.

Today, the Fair includes livestock exhibits, the 5-foot fry pan, home arts, auctions, music, local vendors, rides and competitions. Zach then mentions that Perdue and Toyota are the presenting sponsors for the fair.

Then, Kim Nechay, who is the director of the Perdue Foundation, jumped in and told us that Perdue is the biggest, presenting sponsor for the Wicomico County Fair. She says that Perdue is  bringing fireworks to kick off the fair Friday night. She also says they will be bringing  a number of Perdue associates to the fair  to highlight agriculture, agribusiness, and animal care.

Kim also mentioned “Touch-A Truck” which is an experience where kids get to experience what truckers see and do on the road. It is also a chance for them to know what the life of a truck-driver is. The main purpose is to get the kids excited about agriculture and what the shore has to offer.

Something new is also coming to the fair this year. “This year we will add jousting competitions and Renaissance demonstrations for the first time,” Zach said. “Jousting is Maryland’s official state sport, which serves as another example of the Fair’s focus on the heritage and culture of our community.”
