Traffic Alert: Route 1 Coastal Highway bridge rehab project

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – Officials are sharing a traffic alert for coastal Sussex County. The bridge connecting Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach will be under construction, every night, for the next two months.

The rehab project for the Route 1 Coastal Highway Bridge starts July 15th at 9 p.m. Del DOT will be replacing and reinforcing parts of the bridge as well as stabilizing it.

Officials say they will be closing certain lanes every night, until September 23rd. While locals say they know the construction is needed, they tell 47 ABC that this is an inconvenient time for such a highly traveled route to be closed.

“It’s going to make for a very difficult visit to beaches and area businesses and I imagine that the area businesses are also upset because it may affect their business and their revenue,” says Mary Lou Busby, a Millsboro resident.

The Route 1 Bridge rehab project is part of a larger project that should be finished in May of 2020.
