Shorebirds hold off 9th inning rally from Hagerstown

 SALISBURY, Md. – The Shorebirds fought off a late comeback from the Suns on Friday night to win 4-2. Both teams starting pitchers began the game strong. Through four innings neither team scored and combined for only four hits.

Delmarva pitcher Nick Vespi went five shutout innings allowing two hits while striking out seven Hagerstown batters.

It took till the bottom half of the fifth inning for the Shorebirds to get to Suns pitcher Jake Irvin. Ryne Ogren hit a two RBI triple to right then Adam Hall followed with a sacrifice fly to put Delmarva up 3-0.

Entering the ninth inning down 4-1 the Suns made it interesting, loading the bases down 4-2 but Reed Hayes closed the door on the Suns for the Shorebirds 60th win of the season.

Game three of the four-game Governor’s Cup series is set for first pitch on Saturday, at 7:05 p.m.
