Sen. Carper tours future site of Sussex Charter School

SEAFORD, Del. – Delaware Senator Tom Carper visited the site of a future Sussex County public charter school for the first time on Monday.

Officials met at the Sussex Montessori Charter School to discuss the progress being made there. The school is set to open in the Fall of 2020 and construction is expected to start by this Fall. Senator Carper tells 47 ABC he supports the initiative because it will give parents another choice when it comes to their child’s education. The Senator says improving education also helps attract more employers, who hire people with families, which in turn will help Sussex County grow.

“The Seaford school system, for years, they were the rock stars. They were just about the best in the state. And we want to make sure that that kind of vibrancy and achievement are rekindled and this is part of that,” says Senator Tom Carper.

Officials say students will gradually be enrolled with an end goal of enrolling about 450 kids through 6th grade. School board members say they are looking to make diversity, among both students and staff, a top priority.

As for teachers, the first hiring event was held on Friday and officials say about 25 teachers showed up. The school will officially start hiring teachers around March of 2020.
