Recent Bicycle Accidents Concern Ocean City Bicyclists

Ocean City, Md. – Some bicyclists in Ocean City don’t feel safe riding on their own streets after a biker collided with a car last Thursday in South Bethany.

It’s an accident far too common here on Delmarva and now,

“There are some crazy drivers and I know that from driving here too, so, I never take my bike on the road, Emma Sitrick, a sunset island resident said.

47 ABC reached out to bicycle shops for tips on how to keep yourself safe while biking in Ocean City.

“Assume that you’re invisible, you have to be looking out for them not looking out for you,” Nick Dillon, manager of Continental Cycles said. “kids are riding their bikes to work back and forth everyday and they think they’re in charge, cars think they’re in charge and that’s where you can have some problems you want to ride defensively don’t assume that cars are going to give you the right of way.”

Dillon also suggested that bikers wear helmets, equip bikes with flashing lights, don’t wear headphones during travel and ride with the flow of traffic.

“I see people riding through stop lights doing the rolling stops don’t do that because you never know when a car is going to come out or a person just walking out in the cross walk,” Dillon added.

Sadly, the bicyclist in South Bethany was not wearing a helmet nor were flashing lights equipped to her bike.
