Police investigating deadly crash involving beloved Oxford community member
OXFORD, Md. – Fire fighters across Delmarva are sending their condolences to the Oxford Fire Company after they lost one of their own.
Edith “Edie” Beglin, the President of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Oxford Fire Company, was hit and killed by a car Monday night right outside of the station where she spent so much of her time.
Captain John Bollinger with the Talbot County Sheriff’s Department said, “This is a fatal accident involving a pedestrian. We’re going to do as much as we can to get as much information as possible.”
A makeshift memorial now stands along Oxford Road to honor the life of Beglin.
Captain Bollinger said, “The accident occurred Monday evening, it was about quarter after 6 p.m.”
Beglin lived across the street from the fire company where she spent so much of her time. On Monday, police say she was crossing the road to attend a meeting at the station when she was hit. Some say the car was going 70 miles per hour, but police say that’s not confirmed. They’re now investigating to find out how fast the car was really going.
“It’s all mathematical equations that they put together trying to get the speed of the vehicle it was traveling at impact,” Captain Bollinger said.
We’re told Edith was always cheerful and putting others before herself. Black cloth now hangs on the fire station as her firefighter family grieves their loss.
We reached out to members of the Oxford Fire Company as well as members of the Ladies Auxilary on Wednesday but they told 47ABC they’re just not ready to talk about Edith quite yet.
Police say the driver of the car, 18-year-old Dante Marquis Kane, had three juveniles in the car with him. So far, no charges have been filed in this case.
Police say their investigation could take weeks to complete. Beglin’s funeral will be held on Saturday.
