Online scam raises concerns for Dover city officials

DOVER, Del. – An online scam is raising major concerns for Dover city officials.

A website that looks like it is run by the city is getting money from residents using the website.

City officials say people have been paying their utility bills through the website doxo.com.

The city made the announcement on Wednesday after people trying to pay their utility bills said they were being charged a processing fee. Dover Police and the IT Department are investigating.

Officials are asking people affected by the scam to reach out to their banks and the Dover Customer Service Department. Mayor Robin Christiansen says they will find the culprit.

“We will get to the bottom of this, but at this point in time our first priority is to make sure that utility customers who once again who have in good faith tried to pay their utility bill that they’re not cut off,” said Christiansen.

Mayor Christiansen says as long as temperatures are above 90 degrees they will not do any utility disconnections. As things cool down however they will go back to their policy.
