Lone Star Tick Population Increasing in Maryland

Salisbury, Md.-A specific breed of tick is on the rise in Maryland this summer carrying more than just lyme disease.

The lone star tick can transmit a sugar molecule called alpha-gal which triggers an immune system which can later cause allergies to red meat.

A University of Maryland extension researcher tells 47 ABC that just like lyme disease, it doesn’t have a cure, but it can be treated.

Ginny Rosenkranz, a commercial horticulture researcher warns that commonly held beliefs on dealing with bites from ticks dangerous, especially ones that involve lighting the tick on fire.

“A lot of people think using a lit match on it works, don’t do that you could burn yourself, but also the tick don’t like that and will regurgitate whatever it has into you,” Rosenkranz said.

She also says using vaseline isn’t a very effective tool either because the parasite continues to feed until it dies. Instead she suggests using tweezers and pulling from the point where it’s entering your skin.

Blood tests are recommended if you’ve been bitten and feel feverish and experience pain that moves around your body.
