Dorchester County reallocates $20K for senior services

The Dorchester County Council is taking steps support local senior services after the State of Maryland significantly cut back on funding.

Delmarva Community Services Inc. offers transportation services, meal programs, and more to seniors living around the county. Since state funding for the their meal program was cut by 60 percent and funding for their information office was cut by 30 percent, they asked the council for help.

The council came through and $20,000 was reallocated to Delmarva Community Services from the county’s budget. While program managers are grateful, they say it’s still not enough.

Mary Handley, the Senior Program Manager at Delmarva Community Services said, “We asked the commissioners for help and were very grateful to them for doing what they could. It’s not enough we need more and we’re just going to work on it.”

We’re told Delmarva Community Services will be holding fundraising events to get by.
