Delaware State Fair celebrates 100 years

HARRINGTON, Del. – The Delaware State Fair this summer is celebrating 100 years since its inception and organizers are making sure visitors are joining in on the fun.

The fair started around a potbelly stove at the Harrington railroad station back in 1919.

In the years since millions of people have enjoyed what the fair has to offer and more has been added to the fair this year to make it even better.

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, the fair is offering some new food and they plan to honor those who play a huge role at the fair.

On Saturday, 47ABC spoke to long time fair-goers who say it has been interesting to watch the fair grow and change over the years.

“The fair has come a long way, and I’m just pleased to see this year particularly for the 100th year the grounds and so forth,” said the former President of the Delaware State Fair, Leroy Betts.

“It’s been a big effort on the staff and everyone involved to make it as good as we can,” said Betts.

For those interested in learning more about the history of the Delaware State Fair there are books available at the fair grounds that explain about its inception and growth over the years.
