Crash involving bicyclist turns fatal, DSP investigating
BETHANY BEACH, Del. – South Bethany Police and Delaware State Police are investigating a crash that claimed the life of a bicyclist in South Bethany Thursday night.
At around 10:16 p.m., a Toyota Sienna was traveling southbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane, approaching Evergreen Road, when a bicycle that was traveling westbound across the median proceeded into the southbound lanes, directly into the path of the Toyota. The front end of the Toyota subsequently hit the bicyclist, knocking her to the pavement.
The cyclist, identified as 27-year-old Kelly Scruggs of Annapolis, was initially taken to Beebe Hospital but was later transferred to Christiana Hospital. She died as a result of her injuries on Saturday.
The driver of the Toyota, a 50-year-old Pennsylvania man, was not injured in the crash. Police say they do not believe he was impaired at the time of the incident.
