Chincoteague prepares for heavy influx of visitors

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. – The Town of Chincoteague is getting ready for a massive influx of visitors.

The Chincoteague Pony Swim is now just about a week away, and over the next few days 30,000 to 40,000 people are expected to pour into town to get a glimpse of the famous event.

All those visitors will be bringing in big business to the typically small and quiet town, so local businesses are battening down the hatches ahead of the big crowds.

Evelyn Shotwell with the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce said, “Well it’s all hands on deck everywhere. Staff is maxed out. Everyone is working as many hours as they can work to make sure that all of the visitors have the very best experience that they can have.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Virginia is for Lovers slogan, and in honor of that big letters spelling out LOVE will be featured at the carnival grounds this year for people to take pictures with.
