3rd Annual Maryland 2000 Seeks to Replicate Success Again

Berlin, Md.-The cat and kitten shelters are in need of help from people looking for new furry friends across the state of Maryland.

The Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in conjunction with 20 other shelters across the state are offering free adoption of cats and kittens for the month of July as part of the Maryland 2000 project. The participating shelters will also offer free wellness exams for all felines adopted during the project with a goal to reach 2,000 adoptions.

“We really push it because we have so many kittens coming in and flooding our shelter everyone’s finding kittens whether it’s under their house or car we just have a lot of kittens coming in which strains the shelter so we just try to get them back out and adopted, Heather Bahrami, a volunteer for Worcester County Humane Society said. “We’re always looking for anyone to help us out because some of these kittens need four to five hour care and it’s something we aren’t able to do with so many cats here on our own.”

In 2018, the SPCA said they exceeded the goal of 2,000 adoptions with a total of 2,590 cats finding new homes.
