Tips to make sure your home is energy efficient in the summer heat
SALISBURY, Md. – With the summer heat in full effect, your home’s air conditioning is probably cranked all the way up. But there are things to keep in mind to make sure those units are running as efficiently as possible.
On Thursday, 47 ABC spoke with Cool Runnings HVAC in Salisbury. They tell us the easiest way to keep your home cool in the summer is to close your blinds, to prevent the sun from coming in. You can also make sure drafts from windows and doors are covered. They also tell 47 ABC that most of their calls in the summer are for maintenance of dirty systems, which cause major problems but can easily be prevented.
“The system can’t get any airflow. The coils are dirty. The filter is matted and the system kind of starts burning up basically. And that’s the biggest thing that we always recommend, get on a maintenance program with an HVAC company. What they’ll do is come out once in the summer and once in the winter,” says Tina Tingle with Cool Runnings HVAC.
Tingle adds that you should raise your home’s thermostat to about 75 degrees when you’re not home during the day. She also tells 47 ABC that window units are very inefficient. Instead, she recommends “mini splits” which are installed inside, on the wall of a room.
